How to Get the Rock Bottom, LOWEST Cruise Prices

99% of cruise buyers use the wrong approach to buy a cruise. They call a travel agent with their date and their cruise ship in mind and expect the travel agent to manufacture a low price that the cruise line is not offering on that date. This is the wrong way to get the rock bottom, lowest price.

The ONLY way to get the truly lowest price is to have the travel agent research the cruise ship and itinerary you would like and then let him tell you what date of departure offers the lowest price. Most of you have it backwards; you don’t dictate the price to the cruise line; the cruise line dictates the low price to you. The price is low when the cruise line can’t sell the space; this has NOTHING to do with when you want to go somewhere. It is NOT all about you; it is all about THEM. If you are willing to bend to their date, then you can get a very, very, very low priced deal. Otherwise, no deal.

Cruise lines send e mails to their top producing travel agents when they have unsold space to practically give away for nickels. Cruise lines do NOT put these prices on the Internet. The only way for you to get them is to get tight and get loyal with ONE travel agent who gets these notifications.

So if you want the rock bottom, lowest price, you will have to call a travel agent to get it. I’ve had fourteen night Royal Caribbean cruises to Australia for as low as $19 a day before taxes. I’ve sold 7 night Costa Caribbean cruises for $27 per day before taxes. I’ve just gotten a client, this week, a 7 night Mexico from Princess Cruises for $34 per day before taxes. In EACH of these situations, I, as the travel agent, researched the date and told the client what date they had to go on to get these rates. The client did NOT pick the date first and then get a cheap deal. I found the date, through my research skills, and told them on what date they could have that deal. By the way, every one of these ships cost $500 million to build; each of the above ships was less than five years old; and every one of them was on major, quality cruise lines. All very nice, very luxurious ships, with great cabins and white table cloth dining 21 times a week, for less than you would pay for a flea bag hotel room. Do the math.

Why a Cruise Costs You Less Than Staying at Home

A $399 cruise for 7 nights is really only $240 before taxes because the $399 price INCLUDES the $159 port tax. Subtract $159 from $399 and you get $240, before taxes. This is only $34 per day.

WHY do it this way?

Because it is important for you to understand that the cruise line is NOT getting $399 for this cruise. The cruise line is getting $240 for this cruise for 7 nights. The REST of the AMOUNT is TAXES and FEES.
Likewise, the travel agent is NOT getting a $39 commission on the $399 cruise price.
He is getting a $24 commission on the $240 price. Commissions are NOT paid on taxes.

When you go to the furniture store, based on a newspaper ad for a $1,000 sofa, you never think about the 8% tax on top of that, or an additional $80 you have to pay before you walk out of the store with the new sofa. So why is your thinking about cruises any different?

When a cruise price drops to $240 a week before taxes, if that cruise has $159 port tax and an additional $50 in government fees, the price, of course, is now $449 out the door. However, keep in mind that $209 of that $449 price is TAXES and FEES. These never discount. The government wants their money.
But consider the fact that you are getting yourself on a cruise ship for $240 BEFORE taxes. This price is a steal, even with the additional taxes.

Ask yourself, for a measly $34 per day, where else can you go to live, have 24 hour servants on call, white tablecloth service three times a day from European hotel trained waiters, dancing every night, free Broadway shows every night, five swimming pools, a gym, a sauna, and have free transportation thrown in as well?

You can’t do it. You can’t live any where else for these rates. Not even at home. No, it costs you a small fortune to live at home. Add it up. And it’s not just your principal, interest, taxes and insurance on your house mortgage. Oh no, don’t forget the telephone, the electric, the gas, the water, the sewer, the landscaping services, getting the grass cut, the plumber, the repairs, and on, and on, and on. If you add it all up you’ll soon find you could NEVER live at home for $240 a week plus taxes. I don’t care if the final price is $449 after the taxes because you are STILL not living at home for this price.

This $449 a week cruise price is under $2,000 a month to live in an environment where you have SERVANTS. You have a maid, a cook, a dishwasher, a waiter, actors, singers, chauffeurs (the captain) all waiting on your 24 hours a day. For $34 a day? Come on, there’s no way you can live at home this inexpensively.

So why aren’t many of you just moving onto these cruise ships for 3, 6, 9 months – or even longer?

We can do this. Just do the math.

But also, you need to give yourself permission to cruise more often. Don’t let that little naysayer perch on your shoulder and tell you that you can only take one cruise per year. This is nonsense. I have traveled on as many as ten cruises a year for a six year period. You can do the same. There’s nothing stopping you besides yourself.

Live a little. Live a lot. Go on four, five, six or more cruises per year. It’s do-able. It’s affordable at these rates. It even makes more economic sense than staying at home. So why stay there when you can travel in luxury, style and elegance with live-in servants, as you see the world on a one luxury cruise ship after another.

How a Cruise Meets ALL of Your Needs

According to Abraham Maslow, you have needs. These needs are on five levels, physiological, safety, social, self-esteem and self-actualization. Most product and /or services address one or two of these needs. A cruise meets them all.

Your physiological needs are basic. You need air, food, water, sleep, health and shelter. A cruise provides fresh sea air, 24 hour food, plenty of water, your bed nearby for sleeping, a healthy environment and a comfortable cabin to shelter you. Your physiological needs are 100% met. But there’s more.

A cruise also meets your safety needs. You have a secure place to live. You are sheltered unlike any other travel experience. On a cruise you don’t have to worry about strange hotel rooms in strange cities or questionable environments. You are in a safe, secure environment. Well lit and well-protected. Feel like going out on the town? Just walk down the hall to the dance floor? You return home –safely – to your cabin at the end of the evening.

Social needs, for sure, are met on a cruise. Human beings crave the company of other human beings. We like to be around attractive people and environments to socialize with others. You’ll find plenty of comraderie on a cruise ship.

You need to be respected and to respect yourself. A cruise addresses your needs for self-esteem. Why? Because you have full time servants, that’s why! You’ve got a maid who cleans your cabin twice a day. You’ve got European hotel-trained waiters who serve you at white tablecloths three times a day. You’ve got a chauffeur (the captain) who is moving you from place to place. How could you not have a huge boost in self-esteem by going on a cruise with a maid, cooks, waiters and chauffeurs at your beck and call? If your self-esteem doesn’t double on a cruise, nothing else will do the trick.

Your final need of being self-actualized is certainly met on a cruise, as well. After all, once you’ve got your physiological, safety, social and self-esteem needs all 100% fulfilled on a cruise, why couldn’t you take time to pursue your reading, writing, artistic, musical, educational, spiritual or other actualization activities? You can. You’ve got all the time in the world to improve yourself in so many ways and to become a better person through your cruise experience.

More than at any other time in the past few years, 2009 is promising to be the year of the Long Cruise Deals. The what? The long cruise deals. That is, those cruises that are from 17 to 117 nights or longer.

The statistics are just in from the retail sales of the 2008 Christmas Season. They are not good. Estimates are that sales over all are down 5.5 to 8% in the retail sector. The luxury purchase market, for retail goods priced over $1,000, is down 34% over the 2008 Christmas shopping season, versus the same period one year earlier. All of this bodes poorly for the cruise lines hoping to get full dollar for their lengthier offerings.

Cruise lines need to plan itineraries a full two to three years ahead of sailing dates. They need a lead time of at least 18 months to market and sell cruises. Shorter lead times result in under-sold sailing dates. Whenever a cruise line has to change a sailing itinerary on a date, say six to eight months out, instead of 24 months out, they are going to have to cut prices dramatically to fill up that ship on that changed date. They know this, which is why they are stuck with two to three year lead times for planning itineraries for their entire fleets.

When the economy was booming three years ago, the cruise lines saw demands for their products rapidly escalating. Especially demands for long itineraries. Princess Cruises, for example, has ten million past passengers. These people have almost all been to the Caribbean and to the Mexican Riviera and to Alaska about as much as they want to go already. They want to do something different, something more unusual, something more exotic and something longer than seven or fourteen nights. So, the cruise line accommodates these requests and sets up 48 night and 63 night itineraries. When the economy was booming, these things sell, for higher per day rates than seven night Caribbean cruises, that is for sure.

However we are not in a booming economy now. As 2009 starts the cruise lines have a conundrum. They’ve got these long cruise itineraries out there, but not the demand to fill them up. So I look for prices to come tumbling down with some dramatic deals out there.

Already, I am getting E mails from the major cruise lines with outstandingly low offers. On December 18, 2008 Royal Caribbean sent me an E Mail with a $19 pp, per day, before taxes price on a fourteen night cruise from Australia to New Zealand. The total price, with all taxes was $682 - for a fourteen night cruise. The sailing date was the last week in January 2009, fully five weeks away from the notification date of the deeply discounted rate. I look for this to be a precursor of things to come.

Here’s how you’ll benefit by having me watch these deals for you:
 The recession we’re in will be lowering prices for you dramatically
 This is a once in a decade opportunity for you to see the world for prices you’ve not seen since the time period right after September 11, 2001.

 You will have the advantage of better demographics - higher income, higher net worth, better educated fellow passengers – on the longer itineraries.
 You can take advantage of unsold space to go places you never thought possible because of the previous high cost.
 You will explode your lifestyle by living with servants for longer and longer periods of time than ever before.
 Because living on cruise ships costs less than living at home, you’ll save money.
 You only live once so why not go and see and do what you’ve always dreamed of doing.
 The world cruise you’ve dreamed about may become a reality for you this year.

Despite all the advantages, many of you won’t take advantage of these drastically reduced prices on long cruises because some of you, unfortunately, may have an inability to give yourself permission to take these cruises. Many times I hear that old naysayer perched on your shoulder who is saying to yourself, “That’s too long to be away; I don’t deserve to have this trip; who do you think you are – some jetsetter; what makes you think you are a world traveler; why should you take a 48 night cruise; etc., etc. etc.”

Do yourself a favor and tell that voice in your subconscious to take a hike. Consider all the benefits you will reap from taking a long cruise in 2009 on the lowest rates of the decade and you will decide that taking that 48, 63, or 117 night cruise is just right for you.

Holland America has sent an E mail to Tom Koebel, travel agency owner, that it is marking down certain 7 night Caribbean Cruises to UNDER $35 pp, per day, before taxes. These are deals they are NOT putting out on the Internet. They are quietly letting travel agents who book them about these incredible opportunities.

Cruise lines don’t want to disturb the people who paid lots more than this, so they e mail certain travel agents to let them know when they have unsold space. This is not last-minute. These dates are several weeks still into the future, but they need to be purchased at this time to get the low rate. They sell out several weeks before the sailing date.

The recession is on. Just like the prices have dropped at your local shopping mall the day after Christmas, the cruise lines are ALSO having their “black Friday” type discounted price sales. While you were at the mall buying more junk you don’t need, you could be buying cruises at deeply discounted prices.

That dress you bought for $240, you could have had a seven night cruise, before taxes, for that price. Think about what you’d rather have - the dress, or the cruise? Just a thought. Do you want geegaws or experiences in your life?
